Unsatisfiable Linear k-CNFs Exist, for every k
نویسنده
چکیده
We call a CNF formula linear if any two clauses have at most one variable in common. Let Linear k-SAT be the problem of deciding whether a given linear k-CNF formula is satisfiable. Here, a k-CNF formula is a CNF formula in which every clause has size exactly k. It was known that for k ≥ 3, Linear k-SAT is NP-complete if and only if an unsatisfiable linear k-CNF formula exists, and that they do exist for k ≤ 4. We prove that unsatisfiable linear k-CNF formulas exist for every k. Let f(k) be the minimum number of clauses in an unsatisfiable linear k-CNF formula. We show that f(k) ∈ Ω(k2)∩O(4k), i.e., minimum size unsatisfiable linear k-CNF formulas are significantly larger than minimum size unsatisfiable k-CNF formulas. Finally, we prove that, surprisingly, linear k-CNF formulas do not allow for a larger fraction of clauses to be satisfied than general k-CNF formulas.

متن کاملUnsatisfiable Linear CNF Formulas Are Large and Complex
We call a CNF formula linear if any two clauses have at most one variable in common. We show that there exist unsatisfiable linear k-CNF formulas with at most 4k4 clauses, and on the other hand, any linear k-CNF formula with at most 4 k 8ek clauses is satisfiable. The upper bound uses probabilistic means, and we have no explicit construction coming even close to it. One reason for this is that ...
متن کاملA Method for Constructing Minimally Unsatisfiable CNFs
Ivor Spence[1] has developed an ingenious method for easily generating unsatisfiable 3-cnfs that turn out to be rather difficult for ATPs (automated theorem provers). In this paper, we generalize his construction to cnfs of arbitrary clause length and then show that the unsatisfiable cnfs generated are, usually, “minimally unsatisfiable,” that is, the removal of even one clause results in a sat...
متن کاملOn the Limits of Sparsification
Impagliazzo, Paturi and Zane (JCSS 2001) proved a sparsification lemma for k-CNFs: every k-CNF is a sub-exponential size disjunction of k-CNFs with a linear number of clauses. This lemma has subsequently played a key role in the study of the exact complexity of the satisfiability problem. A natural question is whether an analogous structural result holds for CNFs or even for broader non-uniform...
متن کاملUnsatisfiable hitting clause-sets with three more clauses than variables
Hitting clause-sets (as CNFs), known in DNF language as “disjoint” or “orthogonal”, are clause-sets F , such that any C,D ∈ F , C 6= D, have a literal x ∈ C with x ∈ D. The set of unsatisfiable such F is denoted by UHIT ⊂ MU (minimal unsatisfiability). A basic fact is δ(F ) ≥ 1 for F ∈ MU , where the deficiency δ(F ) := c(F ) − n(F ) is the difference between the number of clauses and the numbe...
